| Resume |Duration - Layers of Existence: January 8th, 2008
The body of works I would like to present include a selection of wall-mounted works and freestanding sculptures. These works explore the relationship we have with places, and the way we negotiate each other in differing environments. The Philosopher Gilles Deleuze references ‘The Fold’, as one of infinite layering existence, these correlate to the ‘Nomadic’ experience of contemporary life.
In this project a collection of artworks ideas of existing simultaneously are explored. The works are a series of airport runways that are translated in the form of sculptural maps, with the aim to juxtapose geographic and cultural similarity and difference. These sculptures and are made of materials indigenous to specific locations for example; Tel Aviv is made of olive wood, Chicago made of cast Metal, Kensai (Japan) built in lush cherry wood, while West Australia’s Shark Bay includes shark cartilage, complemented by Reykjavik (Iceland) rendering in clear perspex. In all the works a politics of difference is explored as each runway creates and index of peoples and places.
A new series of works expands the notion of trans global journey and ‘Global Nomadic’, be it through choice or circumstance. Displacement is a recurring phenomena, recently flood and fire highlight this fragility of habitat. We are constantly on the move engaging in multiple forms of Duration.
The aerial experience is amplified, in’ Day Crossing’ and ‘Night Crossing’, spatiality is rendered in subtle form through the use of a curved flat surface that rolls across the wall, l dipping and rising in a time arrested turbulent drift. While at street level, ‘ Urban Romance’ gives way to ‘Pragmatism’. People encounter each other where bodily form and ethereal shadows meld and collide. The drawings/paintings express this fusion of expressive rendering of the body in space, this means of description is subtle yet confronting.
